The Governors Table – Sydney CBD

Nestled underneath the Museum of Sydney is The Governor’s Table, a gem of a restaurant hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The restaurant is located on the site of the first Government house in Australia, this historical link is reflected in both the menu and the decor.

Executive Chef, Marco Adler serves up modern Australian cuisine with a focus on local produce. Working with a colonial gastronomer, Chef Adler has been able to creatively weave certain elements from days of Governor Arthur Phillip into the menu. The focus on localness extends beyond the food and into the interiors of the venue, with native Australian plants adorning the original sandstone walls.

The menu at The Governor’s Table carries an impressive range of starters. The cured Hiramasa kingfish is a picturesque dish that highlights the flavour of the fish. For something richer, try the salt cod croquettes – delicious parcels of fried goodness.

If you prefer something smaller to start the meal, there’s also a handful of smaller nibbles such as salted caramel popcorn, kombu & chilli ($8) and Blackmans Bay Pacific oysters ($4 each). The sticky pork ($13) is trio of texture, with XO crackers and pickled cucumbers complementing the sweet pork.

Kurobuta Pork Belly – $32

Mains at The Governor’s Table ranges from hearty dishes like the Wood Grilled T-Bone ($44) to lighter options such as the Smoke Trout Salad ($24). The Kurobuta Pork Belly my guest chose was accompanied by a velvety potato puree, some chicharron and buttermilk. My Orrechiette (ear shaped pasta) featured crab, guanciale (cured pork cheeks) and zucchini flowers. The fresh ingredients paired very well with the perfectly cooked pasta.

The service during my visit was perfect, from the moment I arrived with my guest to the clearing of the last dish. This attentiveness heightened an already wonderful dining experience.
Good: Impeccable service, great modern Australian cuisine using local produce
Bad: Nothing. I really could not fault my dinner experience.
Perfect for: Business lunch, romantic dinner, small gathering
Price: $$

This post was based on an independently paid visit. Two dishes were compliments of the chef.
