MGM Macau – Hotel Review

MGM Macau

Amongst the sea of casinos in Macau, the MGM MACAU stands out for its focus on art, family friendliness and attention to detail.

MGM MACAU (澳門美高梅)

Location

The Forbes Travel Guide 5 star hotel sits on prime waterfront real estate and can be easily reached from the Macau Ferry Terminal via the complimentary shuttle buses the hotel offers. Tourist attractions such as Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s are a short taxi ride away (10-15 minutes).

Standing at a towering 35 stories and wrapped in a shimmering glass facade, the MGM MACAU is certainly hard to miss. Step inside the hotel and you are greeted by works of art and natural light.

But the pièce de résistance is definitely the Grande Praça, the central plaza of the hotel that’s been designed to mimic Lisbon’s iconic central train station. A dramatic skylight dome drenches the entire area with sunlight and there’s even a 8 metre tall cylindrical aquarium in the middle. Currently, the Grande Praça is adorned with 160 glass butterflies designed by renowned display artist, Stephen Stefanou.

With the hotel’s emphasis on art, it’s not surprising that there’s a 8,000 square feet Art Space. The current exhibition is showcasing 74 bronze sculptures by French artist Edgar Degas. The best part about it is that admission is free and open to anyone! You’ll also spot other works of art scattered throughout the hotel by the likes of Dali, Chihuly and Gao Xiaowu.

The Grand Deluxe Ocean View Room that I was staying in was very spacious measuring at 48 square metres. The rectangular room faces the ocean providing some sweet views. The bathroom is divided from the bed by a floor to ceiling glass partition, with a small sitting nook in between.

A 46 inch LED TV hangs above the wooden counter top that doubles as a writing desk. The mini bar underneath is decently stocked with soft drinks, water and Macau beer, there’s also tea and coffee making facilities.

Guests staying at the MGM MACAU have complimentary access to the gym and the outdoor pool. For some serious relaxation, head to the in house spa centre, TRIA. I was invited to experience a 2 hour spa session and it was a blissful and memorable experience (it was my first spa session ever)!

If you want to do some shopping, there’s a direct passageway to One Central – a 200,000 square foot luxury retail centre.

Guests have a range of options when it comes to dining at the MGM MACAU. During my stay, I was able to dine at the French Seafood restaurant Aux Beaux Arts and the Imperial Court restaurant which serves classic Cantonese cuisine. Both restaurants excelled in terms of food and service. For those with bigger appetites, check out Rossio – the hotel’s buffet restaurant.

Service

The check in process was swift and my luggage was delivered straight to my room. The staff at the restaurants and the spa were thoroughly attentive, for example when I was dining alone at Rossio, a magazine was placed on my table for me to peruse.

Small Details

I love how the hotel doesn’t feel like your typical casino resort with over the top extravagance and slot machines everywhere.

Verdict

The MGM MACAU is definitely not your typical casino hotel, it’s a place to unwind but still has fun experiences – whether that’s shopping, dining or admiring art.

This review was based on an complimentary stay.
