Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle – Singapore (1 Michelin Star)

Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle is the cheapest Michelin meal in the world at only $2.oo SGD for a plate.

Food

Chef and owner, Mr Chan Hon Meng, has perfected the traditional Cantonese soya sauce chicken. In order to maintain the quality of dish, he limits production to only 180 chickens per day, so make sure you line up early!

Since I had arrived at the stall extra early (to beat the infamous wait of 1 hour or more), I decided to reward my dedication by getting both the rice and noodle dish.

Let’s start with the chicken, the glistening skin is packed with flavour and the meat is oh so succulent and tender. Under the chicken there’s a generous mound of fluffy white rice that’s been doused in rich soya sauce. A small scoop of peanuts is served on the side to provide a bit of texture to the dish.

The same chicken is used for the noodle dish, which is paired with springy noodles, vegetables and a portion of tasty chili.

Apart from the two signature dishes, you can also order roasted pork rice, char siu rice, vegetables and even a whole chicken.

Drinks

No drinks are sold at the stall but conveniently there’s several shops nearby that sell a variety of drinks including fresh juices, smoothies and teas.

Service

At Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken, it’s completely self service. Once you it’s your turn, place your order and within seconds it’s ready. Take your precious cargo and find a seat at the bright red tables that are dotted throughout the hawker centre.

Atmosphere

Being in a hawker centre means diners can expect a loud, busy and messy atmosphere. For some people this may be a negative but I’ve love the hustle and bustle of hawker centres.

Verdict

Awarding a Michelin star to a hawker stall may seem odd but once you’ve had a bite of Hong Kong Soya Sauce chicken you will understand why.
