Sydney has no shortage of ramen shops, but Nichi Getsu Do is a must-visit for ramen connoisseurs. This cozy noodle joint, tucked away on Kent Street, was born thanks to a 30-year friendship between owner Curtis Cifuentes and his friend Kobayashi, the founder of Nichi Getsu Do in Japan.
Though Nichi Getsu Do borrows its name and menu from the ramen restaurants in Saitama, it’s been carefully adapted to suit Australian palates while remaining authentic to Japanese ramen.
The Food at Nichi Getsu Do
The star attraction is the Original Miso Ramen ($19), which features a special blend of six types of miso imported from Japan, resulting in a complex, rich broth. Bean sprouts, cabbage, and garlic chives add a distinct smokiness thanks to the wok hei process used to prepare them. Onion, corn, and pork mince round out the toppings, while a thick, chewy noodle provides textural delight.

For those with a bigger appetite, the Special Miso Ramen ($27) features grilled chasu pork, a soft boiled egg, and walnut rayu (chilli oil). While miso ramen is their specialty, there’s also a Shiitake Shio Ramen ($24), Shoyu Ramen ($24), and even a Chasu Pork Rice Bowl ($15).

Keep an eye out for their specials, which range from the spicy Tan Tan Ramen — perfect for Sydney’s winter — to the Zaru, a refreshing option that’s inspired by the popular cold noodle dish Hiyashi Chuka.
The Service at Nichi Getsu Do
On every visit (it’s becoming my go-to lunch spot since I work nearby), the staff are always friendly and efficient. Water is served as soon as I’m seated, and my ramen arrives quickly.
I love that Nichi Getsu Do serves ramen with a slotted spoon, making it easy to scoop up the corn and mince.
The Vibe at Nichi Getsu Do

Although the ramen shop is located under a block of apartments, it’s been tastefully designed with wooden features that create a bright, modern atmosphere.
